Getting Ready for Wildfire Season, Not Just Hoping It Skips Us

It used to be that wildfire smoke was something that happened “over there.” That's changed. August is typically our driest, highest-risk month, and a lot of homes around Clackamas County are closer to forested land than people think — even ones that don't feel remote at all.

Worth doing this month:

• Clear gutters of dry leaves and debris — dry gutters catch embers
• Check attic and crawl space vents for ember-resistant screening
• Trim back vegetation and clear dead plant material near the foundation
• Make sure outdoor water sources are actually accessible if you need them
• If you're planning any exterior work — siding, decking, an addition — this is a good time to think about fire-resistant material options
